India secured a four-wicket victory in the first ODI against England in Nagpur, despite missing key batter Virat Kohli, who was ruled out due to a swollen right knee. The 36-year-old was expected to play, but his knee issue surfaced just hours before the match. Shreyas Iyer replaced him in the playing XI and delivered a stellar 59-run knock off 36 deliveries to help India chase down England’s 249-run target.
Shubman Gill Assures Kohli’s Return in Second ODI
Following the game, Shubman Gill provided an update on Kohli’s injury, stating that it isn’t serious and the star batter is likely to return for the second ODI in Cuttack.
“It’s nothing serious. He (Kohli) was fine during yesterday’s (Wednesday) practice, but he woke up with some swelling in his knee this morning (Thursday). He’ll definitely be back for the second ODI,” Gill told Star Sports.
The team management remains cautious with Kohli, considering his workload and upcoming commitments, including the Champions Trophy 2025. His return will provide much-needed stability to India’s batting lineup, especially against England’s aggressive bowling attack.
Kohli’s Form Under Scrutiny
Despite being a modern-day batting icon, Kohli’s recent form has raised concerns. After a century against Australia in Perth, his struggle against deliveries outside the off-stump became evident. He also failed to make an impact in the Ranji Trophy, managing just six runs against Railways.
With the Champions Trophy approaching, Kohli’s performances in the next two ODIs will be crucial. The selectors and management will closely monitor his rhythm, as India needs its most experienced batter in top shape ahead of the tournament.
Gill, Iyer, and Axar Lead India’s Chase
England set a competitive target of 249 runs, and India faced early setbacks as they were reduced to 19/2. With pressure mounting, Gill and Iyer took control, stitching a 94-run partnership to revive the innings. After Iyer’s departure, Gill combined with Axar Patel, adding 108 runs to push India closer to victory.
Gill played a composed yet aggressive knock, scoring 87 runs, while Axar Patel contributed 52 runs off 47 deliveries. Their efforts ensured that India secured a comfortable victory, despite England’s bowlers striking early.
Gill Reflects on His Match-Winning Performance
Following the game, Gill emphasized his approach and mindset during the chase. He revealed that he wasn’t concerned about reaching a century but instead focused on exploiting field placements.
“No, I wasn’t thinking about my century. I was focused on the field placements and played my shots accordingly. I wanted to dominate the bowler, and I would have played the same shot even if I was in my 60,” Gill said.
His confidence and adaptability under pressure further strengthen his case for a permanent spot in India’s ODI setup.
India Eyes Series Win in Cuttack
With a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, India will look to seal the series in Cuttack. Kohli’s expected return could add more depth to the batting order, and the team will aim to continue its winning momentum.
England, on the other hand, will seek to bounce back and level the series. Their bowlers showed promise early on, but inconsistent middle-overs bowling and poor fielding cost them in Nagpur. As the series moves forward, all eyes remain on Kohli’s return and his form, which will be a key talking point ahead of the Champions Trophy.
