Manchester City began the new Premier League season with a dramatic 2-1 win over Bournemouth. The match took place at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, August 23, but the result remained a major sports story on Monday, August 24. It was the first Premier League game for new City boss Enzo Maresca, who took charge after the end of the Pep Guardiola era.

Cherki changes the match

The late comeback gave Maresca a much better start.
After the final whistle, Maresca went onto the pitch and hugged his players. He also celebrated with great emotion when Gvardiol’s goal was confirmed. For a new manager, the moment offered a huge sense of relief.
City fans had also welcomed Maresca before the match with a large banner that read, “Welcome back Enzo.” Maresca had worked as part of Guardiola’s City staff during the club’s treble-winning 2022-23 season, so his return had a special link with the club.
City still have work to do
Despite the victory, City cannot ignore the problems from this match.
The team looked short of ideas for long periods. Haaland had few clear chances. The midfield lacked balance, and Bournemouth found space on the counter. Maresca will also need time to bring his own style to a squad that had years of Guardiola’s methods.

Bournemouth can take pride from the match
For Bournemouth boss Marco Rose, the final result was harsh. His side came close to one of the biggest wins in club history at the Etihad.
Bournemouth defended well for most of the match and made City work hard for every chance. Tavernier’s goal gave the visitors a strong position, and their defence held firm until the final six minutes.
