Harshit Rana Ruled Out as Yash Thakur Gets India Call

India have suffered a fresh blow before their upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan and the 2026 Asian Games. Fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of both events after he suffered another hamstring injury.

The news comes at an important time for India. The team has several major matches ahead, with the Afghanistan series set to start on September 13 in New Delhi. India will also take part in the Asian Games later this month.

Rana had returned to the Indian team after a period away from international cricket. However, his latest injury has forced the selectors to make a change. The Board of Control for Cricket in India, or BCCI, has named Vidarbha fast bowler Yash Thakur as his replacement.

Thakur will now be part of both the Afghanistan T20I squad and the Indian squad for the Asian Games.

Fresh Hamstring Injury Ends Rana’s Return

Harshit Rana’s latest setback is especially disappointing because he had only recently returned to the Indian side.

The young fast bowler had suffered a similar hamstring problem in the past. That injury kept him out of the 2026 T20 World Cup and the IPL 2026 season. He later made his return during India’s tours of Ireland and England.

Rana was also part of India’s plans for the Afghanistan series and the Asian Games. His selection, however, came with a fitness condition. He needed to prove that he was ready for full match action.

During fitness tests at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, Rana suffered another problem. Reports said he had not fully recovered from his earlier hamstring issue. The fresh setback meant he could not get the clearance required to remain with the squad.

For India, the timing is not ideal. The Afghanistan series is only days away, while the Asian Games campaign will start later in September. The team now has to adjust its plans for the pace attack.

Yash Thakur Gets Another Chance

Yash Thakur has received a major opportunity at the right time.

The 27-year-old fast bowler from Vidarbha will replace Rana in both squads. This is not his first chance with India. Thakur recently made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe.

His earlier chance showed what he could offer. During the Zimbabwe series, Thakur took four wickets in two matches. His domestic record has also helped him earn attention from the selectors.

Thakur has taken 114 wickets in 76 T20 matches. His record shows that he has plenty of experience in the shortest format of the game. His best T20 figures are five wickets for 16 runs.

He has also done well in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he has taken 81 wickets at an economy rate of 7.04. These numbers give India another pace option as they prepare for a busy period.

India Get Good News on Bumrah

While Rana’s injury is a setback, India have also received some positive news about other players.

Jasprit Bumrah has cleared his fitness test and is set to return to the T20I squad. This is a major boost for India because Bumrah remains one of the team’s most important fast bowlers.

Bumrah had been away from action after he suffered a left knee injury during India’s ODI tour of England in July. His fitness had been a major topic before the Afghanistan series.

His return gives India experience and quality in the pace attack. His presence could also help the younger bowlers, including Yash Thakur, as they prepare for international matches.

Washington Sundar and Nitish Reddy Also Clear Fitness Tests

India have also received good news about Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Both players have cleared their fitness tests and are set to return to the T20I squad. Sundar had faced a hamstring problem, while Reddy had been recovering from a quadriceps injury.

Their return gives India more balance. Sundar can offer both spin bowling and useful runs with the bat. Reddy also gives the team an extra all-round option.

With Bumrah, Sundar and Reddy fit, India still have several important players available despite Rana’s absence.

Afghanistan Series Starts on September 13

India’s three-match T20I series against Afghanistan will start on September 13 in New Delhi.

The first match will take place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The other matches are scheduled for September 15 and September 17.

There had been some concern about the first match because the BRICS summit is also set to take place in Delhi around the same time. Security and traffic issues had led to talks about a possible change.

However, the Delhi and District Cricket Association has confirmed that the first T20I will take place on September 13 as planned.

This means India can now focus fully on the cricket. The series will also give the team an important chance to prepare before the Asian Games.

Asian Games Also a Major Target

The Afghanistan series is not the only major assignment for India.

After the three T20Is, India will play a one-off match against Japan in Tokyo on September 22. The Indian team will then start its Asian Games campaign on September 28.

India are set to defend their gold medal at the Asian Games. That makes player fitness even more important.

Rana’s absence means the team will have to depend on other fast bowlers. Yash Thakur now has a chance to prove that he can handle the pressure of a major international event.

The Afghanistan series will be especially useful for him. If he performs well, he can build confidence before the Asian Games.

What Rana’s Absence Means for India

Rana’s absence changes India’s pace options. He was expected to be part of the bowling group for both the Afghanistan series and the Asian Games.

His ability to bowl with pace made him an important option for the team. But his latest injury means India cannot risk his return before he is fully fit.

The decision to leave him out also shows the importance of player fitness. With several major matches ahead, India need players who can handle the full workload.

Yash Thakur now has the chance to fill that gap. He has already had a taste of international cricket, but the Afghanistan series and Asian Games will offer a much bigger stage.

A Big Opportunity for Yash Thakur

For Thakur, this call-up can become an important point in his career.

He was already part of India’s plans after his performances in domestic cricket and the Zimbabwe T20Is. Now he has a chance to play a larger role.

The pressure will be high, but the opportunity is also clear. India need a reliable fast bowler, and Thakur can make his case through his performances.

His previous experience with the Indian team should help him settle faster. The coaching staff will also expect him to keep things simple and focus on his basic strengths.

India Still Have Strong Options

Despite Rana’s injury, India still have a strong group for the upcoming matches.

Bumrah’s fitness is perhaps the biggest positive development. Sundar and Reddy are also ready, giving India more choices across the team.

The loss of Rana is therefore a setback, but it does not leave India without options. The selectors have acted quickly by bringing Thakur into both squads.

The next few weeks will show how well the revised team performs.

For Rana, the main priority will now be a full recovery. For Thakur, the goal is very different. He has been handed a major opportunity to show that he belongs at the international level.

India will begin their Afghanistan campaign on September 13, with the Asian Games still ahead. The team will hope its fitness problems do not grow further and that the returning stars can make a strong impact.
