Alexander Zverev has moved into the quarter-finals of the 2026 US Open after a strong win over Italy’s Luciano Darderi. The top-seeded German beat the 21st seed 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(3) at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night.
The result gives Zverev another major milestone in a year that has already brought him his first Grand Slam title. He is now the only man to reach the quarter-finals at all four Grand Slam events in 2026. That means he has reached the last eight at the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open in the same season.
For Zverev, this result also gives him his fifth US Open quarter-final place. The German reached the final in New York in 2020, so he knows what it takes to go deep at this event. He will now aim to take another step toward a second major title.
A quick start from the top seed

The long matches had placed extra pressure on Zverev. A shorter match against Darderi gave him a much-needed chance to save energy before the quarter-finals.

Zverev finds his rhythm
Zverev’s path to the quarter-finals has not been perfect. His first two matches were long and difficult, and he had to fight hard to stay alive in the tournament.

Van de Zandschulp came back from two sets down to beat the French player 3-6, 6-7(0), 7-6(7), 7-6(3), 6-4. The match lasted five hours, and Gea came close to a place in the quarter-finals.
The result sets up an interesting contrast. Zverev enters the quarter-final after a relatively short straight-sets win, while Van de Zandschulp arrives after a long and demanding battle.
That could give Zverev an advantage in terms of energy. But Van de Zandschulp has already shown that he can survive pressure and long matches.
A chance to go even further
Zverev will now have a clear goal: reach the semi-finals and move closer to another Grand Slam final.
His victory over Darderi showed that he can handle pressure even after a difficult start to the tournament. More importantly, he now has the confidence that comes from reaching the quarter-finals at all four majors in one year.
