India Beat Pakistan 4-3 to Reach Asian Games Final

India beat Pakistan 4-3 in a dramatic men’s hockey semi-final at the Asian Games 2026 on October 1. The match took place at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara, Japan.

India looked set for a calm win after a strong start gave them a 3-0 lead. Pakistan, however, did not give up. The team came back with three goals and made the score 3-3.

The match then went down to the final minute. With less than a minute left, Abhishek found the decisive goal for India. His shot took a deflection off a Pakistan stick and crossed the line. India held on for a 4-3 win and a place in the gold medal match.

The result kept India’s title defence alive. It also gave the Indian team a direct path to a possible place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as the Asian Games men’s hockey gold medal brings Olympic qualification.

India make a fast start

India began the semi-final with clear intent. The team moved the ball well and put Pakistan under pressure from the first few minutes.

Pakistan had the first shot on target in the third minute, but Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera made the save. India then earned its first penalty corner soon after.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh took charge from the set piece. In the fifth minute, he sent a powerful drag-flick towards the goal. The ball went through the legs of Pakistan goalkeeper Ali Reza, and India took a 1-0 lead.

Harmanpreet struck again in the 13th minute. India earned another penalty corner, and the captain sent another strong drag-flick past the Pakistan defence. The second goal gave India a 2-0 lead.

Pakistan had some penalty corners of its own before the end of the first quarter. India, however, kept its defence firm and went into the next period with a two-goal advantage.

Sukhjeet makes it 3-0

India kept control of the match in the second quarter. Pakistan found it hard to deal with India’s movement and quick passes.

In the 23rd minute, India added a third goal. Shilanand Lakra made a run down the left side and sent the ball towards Sukhjeet Singh. Sukhjeet got the final touch and sent the ball into the net.

The goal put India 3-0 ahead. At that stage, the Indian side looked close to a comfortable victory.

Pakistan, though, got an important goal just before half-time. In the 30th minute, captain Abu Bakar Mahmood converted a penalty corner. His goal cut India’s lead to 3-1.

That goal gave Pakistan fresh hope before the break. India still had a two-goal lead, but Pakistan now had a clear path back into the match.

Pakistan start the comeback

The third quarter was much tighter. India had control for long periods but could not add a fourth goal.

Pakistan began to create more pressure as the quarter moved on. The Indian defence had to work harder to stop attacks near the circle.

In the 44th minute, India lost Dilpreet Singh for a short period after he received a green card. Pakistan used the extra player well.

Soon after, Hannan Shahid scored in the 45th minute. His goal made the score 3-2.

The goal changed the mood of the match. India still had the lead, but Pakistan could now see a real chance to level the game.

The Pakistani attack grew stronger as the final quarter came closer. India had chances to regain control, but the team could not find the goal it needed.

Pakistan make it 3-3

Pakistan completed its comeback in the 49th minute.

Waheed Rana scored after Pakistan moved into the Indian circle from the right. His goal made the score 3-3.

A match that had looked almost settled in India’s favour was now level. Pakistan had come back from three goals down, and the final minutes became a test of calm and control for both sides.

The teams pushed for one more goal. A place in the Asian Games final was at stake, so neither side wanted to give the other an easy chance.

Pakistan came close to taking the lead when it earned a penalty corner in the 54th minute. Sufiyan took the drag-flick, but Amit Rohidas blocked the effort.

India then had a penalty corner with about 90 seconds left. Pakistan asked for a review, and the decision was changed. India received a free hit instead.

With time almost over, the match looked close to a shootout. India needed one more attack. That moment soon arrived.

Abhishek scores the late winner

India found the winning goal with about 50 seconds left on the clock.

Abhishek received the chance near the right side of the circle and sent his shot towards the Pakistan goal. The first effort did not go in. The goalkeeper made a save, and another attempt was also blocked.

The ball, however, stayed alive. It then took a deflection off a Pakistan stick and crossed the line.

The goal gave India a 4-3 lead.

There was almost no time left for Pakistan to respond. The Pakistani players tried to create one final chance, but India kept control until the final whistle.

Hockey India said the goal came with 49.2 seconds left. Other reports put the time at about 45 to 50 seconds. The key fact remained the same: Abhishek scored in the final minute to send India into the gold medal match.

Harmanpreet leads India’s attack

Harmanpreet Singh played a major role in India’s result.

The captain scored both of India’s first two goals. Both came from penalty corners, and both showed his value as one of India’s main drag-flick experts.

His first goal came in the fifth minute. His second came in the 13th minute.

Those two goals gave India an early 2-0 advantage and allowed the team to control much of the first half.

Sukhjeet Singh then added the third goal in the 23rd minute. Abhishek completed the Indian goal list with his late strike.

For Pakistan, Abu Bakar Mahmood, Hannan Shahid and Waheed Rana each scored once. Their three goals brought Pakistan back from 3-0 down and made the match one of the closest semi-finals of the Asian Games.

Pakistan show strong character

Pakistan faced a huge problem after India moved 3-0 ahead. Many teams may have struggled to recover from such a position, but Pakistan stayed in the contest.

Abu Bakar Mahmood gave the side a lifeline before half-time. Hannan Shahid then cut the gap to one goal in the 45th minute.

Waheed Rana completed the comeback four minutes later.

The three goals came in different parts of the match, but together they changed the entire contest. Pakistan went from three goals behind to level at 3-3.

That effort showed the strength of the Pakistani response. The team had a real chance to reach the final before Abhishek’s late strike ended that hope.

India keep their title defence alive

India entered the Asian Games as the men’s hockey title holders. The 4-3 win means the team now has one more match before it can claim another gold medal.

The result also adds to India’s strong recent record against Pakistan. Dawn reported that the win extended India’s unbeaten run against Pakistan to 21 matches.

The Indian team had also topped Pool A without a defeat before the semi-final. Pakistan finished second in Pool B after one loss to Malaysia.

Pakistan had shown strong form in the group stage, with wins against Thailand, Uzbekistan, China and Oman. That record helped set up a highly competitive semi-final against India.

A place in the Olympic race

The result has importance beyond the Asian Games gold medal.

The men’s hockey gold medal at the Asian Games also carries a direct place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. India are now one match away from that prize.

The Indian players have spoken about gold and Olympic qualification as major goals for the tournament. Defender Jarmanpreet Singh said the team’s main target from the start was to win gold and secure a place at the Los Angeles Games.

India’s win over Pakistan therefore gives the side a chance to achieve both targets in one final match.

India face Malaysia in the final

India will face Malaysia in the men’s hockey gold medal match on October 3.

Malaysia defeated South Korea in the other semi-final and earned its place in the title match. Pakistan will also play on October 3, with the bronze medal at stake.

For India, the focus now shifts from the Pakistan result to the final. The team will need to fix the problems that appeared after the 3-0 lead.

The match against Pakistan showed both sides of India’s performance. The first half had strong attack and good control. The second half showed how quickly a large lead can disappear when the other team gains pressure.

India will want a more complete performance in the final.

A warning despite the win

The 4-3 score gave India a place in the final, but the match also showed some clear problems.

A 3-0 lead should have given India enough comfort. Instead, Pakistan scored three times and brought the match level.

The Indian defence came under heavy pressure after the break. Pakistan found more space, created more chances and made better use of its opportunities.

The late goal from Abhishek saved India from a much tougher outcome. The result was a win, but the way the match changed after the 3-0 lead will be an important point for India before the final.

A memorable Asian Games semi-final

The India-Pakistan hockey semi-final had almost everything a major match can offer.

India had a fast start. Harmanpreet scored twice, and Sukhjeet added another goal. Pakistan then showed great resolve and came back from 3-0 down.

The score reached 3-3 with only a short time left. Both teams had chances to take control. Pakistan came close through a penalty corner, while India also had a set-piece chance that was overturned after a review.

Then came Abhishek’s late effort.

His goal arrived when the match appeared close to a shootout. The deflection made the finish even more dramatic, and India held on for the 4-3 result.

The victory sends India into the Asian Games men’s hockey final. It also keeps the team’s gold medal and Olympic qualification hopes alive.

For Pakistan, the result means a bronze medal match is next. For India, one final hurdle remains.

The gold medal match will take place on October 3, with India set to face Malaysia. After a tense 4-3 win over Pakistan, the Indian men now have one clear goal left: finish the Asian Games campaign with the gold medal.
