The Sanford Sports Academy 16U Girls basketball team has made significant strides this season, culminating in an invitation to the prestigious USA Basketball Club Championships. This honor comes on the heels of their strong performance at the “Live at the Lakes” AAU event in Bloomington, Minnesota, where they finished with an impressive 3-1 record.
Path to the Invitation
The team’s journey to this invitation was marked by hard work, determination, and standout performances. Competing in the highly competitive “Live at the Lakes” event, the team faced some of the toughest opponents in the AAU circuit. The highlight of the tournament was their victory over a formidable team from the Under Armour Circuit, a testament to their skill and resilience.
“We went 3-1 at that tournament and beat one of those teams, that is a really, really good team in the Under Armor Circuit. Going into that tournament we knew is something that we could get but we had to play well. So it was a little nerve-wracking knowing like, hey, we got to perform, but the girls did a really nice job,” said Barry Jacobsen, the head coach of the Sanford Sports Academy.
Preparing for the Club Championships
The Sanford Sports Academy 16U team is one of only 24 teams nationwide to receive an invitation to the USA Basketball Club Championships. This opportunity allows the team to compete at a higher level and gain exposure to some of the best basketball talents in the country.
“I think we’ll see a lot of good competition there. It’ll be a different pace definitely. It’ll be a lot faster, so just adjusting to that. Seeing players we’ve never seen before and competing against some of the best in the nation, it would be really helpful to all of us,” noted Ashlyn Koupal, a forward for the team.
Focused and Ready
Despite the summer vacation, the Sanford Sports Academy team has remained focused and committed to their training. Coach Jacobsen emphasizes the importance of understanding the stakes of these high-level tournaments and locking in during game time.
“Just trying to get them to understand the importance of these tournaments and some of these games and just really lock in for these next eight, sixteen minutes, right, that’s all it’s going to take. And then we’re going to be done and then you can have a rest,” Jacobsen explained.
Upcoming Challenges
Before heading to the USA Basketball Club Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina, the team will compete in a tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. This event serves as a crucial preparation step, allowing the team to fine-tune their strategies and build cohesion.
“We have some just unbelievable defensive players and for us to go up against some of these teams, we’re going to have to rely on our defense to hopefully get us some easy shots. But I feel very confident going into this weekend, going down to Louisville and then next weekend going down to South Carolina,” Jacobsen added.

The Sanford Sports Academy 16U Girls basketball team has had a stellar season, holding a 21-3 overall record. Their success is a result of a combination of talent, teamwork, and exceptional coaching.
