As the Indian cricket team prepares for a crucial white-ball series against Sri Lanka, featuring three ODIs and three T20Is, India head coach Gautam Gambhir and selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar addressed the media in Mumbai. The press conference covered several critical aspects of the team’s strategy and player selection, shedding light on some of the most talked-about topics in Indian cricket.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s ODI Future
One of the pressing questions was the future of veteran cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI format, especially with the next ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027. Gautam Gambhir, addressing the issue, didn’t rule out the possibility of their inclusion but emphasized the importance of fitness.
“I think they’ve shown what they can deliver on the big stage whether it was the T20 World Cup and in the 50-over World Cup as well. Both those guys have got a lot of cricket left in them. With the Champions Trophy and a big tour of Australia coming up, they would be motivated enough. The key is their fitness till the 2027 World Cup,” Gambhir said.
He further elaborated that the decision is highly personal and depends on how much the players can contribute to the team’s success. “Ultimately, it’s up to them and the selectors to see if they can keep delivering at the highest level,” he added.
Suryakumar Yadav’s T20I Captaincy and ODI Future
Another significant development is the promotion of Suryakumar Yadav to T20I captaincy. Ajit Agarkar explained that Hardik Pandya’s fitness issues led to this decision. However, despite his prowess in the shorter format, Suryakumar does not find a place in the current ODI squad due to stiff competition from returning players like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer.
Agarkar stated, “Hardik’s fitness issues opened up the opportunity for Suryakumar. However, the ODI squad is highly competitive, and with key players returning, it is a challenge for Suryakumar to find a place.”
Ravindra Jadeja’s Absence From Sri Lanka ODIs
Ravindra Jadeja’s exclusion from the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series raised many eyebrows. Addressing the speculation, Agarkar clarified that Jadeja has not been dropped but rested due to the intense upcoming Test schedule.
“We should have clarified this when we announced the squad. He hasn’t been dropped but rested. There are a lot of Test series coming up, and he will be playing a lot of those,” Agarkar confirmed.
Shubman Gill As Vice-Captain
Shubman Gill has been named the vice-captain for both ODIs and T20Is, reflecting BCCI’s long-term plans for him. Agarkar highlighted that Gill is viewed as a three-format player with leadership qualities that the selectors want to nurture.
“Shubman Gill is the guy we feel is a three-format player. He has shown a lot of qualities over the last year and decent leadership qualities. We want to give him ample experience in the leadership role,” Agarkar revealed.
Hardik Pandya’s Fitness
Discussing Hardik Pandya’s role, Agarkar acknowledged his value to the team but pointed out his ongoing fitness concerns. Managing Hardik’s workload and ensuring he remains fit for critical matches is a priority for the selectors.
“Fitness has been something he’s struggled with. We want someone as captain who is likely to be available more. We also feel we can manage Hardik better, considering his capabilities with the bat and ball,” Agarkar said.
Mohammed Shami’s Return
Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami, who hasn’t played for India since the conclusion of the last ODI World Cup, is set to make a comeback. Agarkar mentioned that Shami has resumed bowling in the nets and could be available for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.
“He has started to bowl. The first Test is on September 19th, and that was always the goal for his comeback. We’ll have to see if he can make it back to the squad by then,” Agarkar mentioned.
Relationship With Virat Kohli
Addressing the speculations about his relationship with Virat Kohli, Gambhir dismissed the rumors of a tiff as baseless and focused on their shared goal of representing India.
“It (rumours of a tiff) is good for the TRP but my relationship with him has been good. What’s important is we are representing 140 crore Indians. We’ve shared messages. It’s not important if we have chatted before my announcement or after. He is a world-class player, I have huge respect for him,” Gambhir said.
