India Beat Sri Lanka by 165 Runs in Galle Test

India secured a strong 165-run win over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Galle on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. The result gave India a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series and also gave the team a major boost in the World Test Championship race. The match was part of India’s 600th Test, which made the victory even more special for the visitors.

The main hero was left-arm spinner Manav Suthar. In only his second Test match, the 24-year-old took 10 wickets across both Sri Lankan innings. He took four wickets in the first innings and six more in the second. His second-innings figures were 6-55, and those six wickets helped India finish the match before rain could change the result.

Sri Lanka Had a Target of 372

India gave Sri Lanka a target of 372 runs for victory. That was always a difficult task on a slow Galle pitch, but the home side had enough time to try to save the Test. Sri Lanka began the final day at 84-4, with six wickets left and a large gap between them and the target.

India needed 16 wickets across the match to secure the win, and Suthar became the key part of that plan. His control with the ball made life hard for the Sri Lankan batters. He kept a good line and length and used the pitch well. His spell gave India the control it needed during the final part of the Test.

Sri Lanka did not give up without a fight. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva made 59, while Sonal Dinusha scored 84. The pair put on 95 runs for the fifth wicket. Their stand gave Sri Lanka some hope and forced India to work hard for the last few wickets.

Suthar Changes the Match

The key moment came when Suthar broke the partnership. He dismissed Dinusha after the batter had made 84 and was close to another major score. Suthar then removed Prabath Jayasuriya for a first-ball duck.

The left-arm spinner did not stop there. He dismissed Lahiru Kumara with the last ball of the same over. He then removed Keshara Nuwantha to seal the Indian win. Sri Lanka were all out for 206 in 77.4 overs.

Suthar finished the match with 10 wickets for 131 runs. It was his first 10-wicket haul in Test cricket. It was also a major record for the young spinner. At the age of 24, he became the youngest Indian spinner to take 10 wickets in an overseas Test.

His result was even more notable because this was only his second Test. A player so new to Test cricket rarely gets such a major role in a match abroad. Suthar showed calm control in difficult conditions and gave India a new reason for confidence in its spin attack.

Padikkal Gives India a Strong Start

Suthar was the main star with the ball, but Devdutt Padikkal played a major role with the bat. The left-hand batter scored 167 in India’s first innings. His long knock gave India the base it needed for a large total. Padikkal also made 44 in the second innings.

Padikkal received the Player of the Match award for his work with the bat. His first-innings score was especially important because India needed a large total on a pitch that became harder to score on as the Test moved ahead.

Padikkal had entered the side as a replacement for the injured Sai Sudharsan. His display gave the team another option at No. 3. India captain Shubman Gill praised Padikkal for his consistency and his ability to turn a century into a very large score.

India Stay Calm Under Pressure

The match was not easy for India from start to finish. Sri Lanka had moments when it could put pressure on the visitors. Its spinners also had an effect during India’s first innings. Yet India built a strong total and later used its bowlers well when the match reached its final stage.

The Indian side also had to deal with rain. Weather had already reduced play earlier in the Test. On the final day, rain once again became a major concern. India secured the last wicket only minutes before a heavy downpour hit Galle. Had the rain arrived earlier, Sri Lanka could have had a chance to save the match.

That made the timing of the final wicket important. India did not just win by a large margin. It also completed the result at a point when the weather could have caused more trouble.

A Big Result for the World Test Championship

The win has value beyond the two-Test series. India moved up to fifth place in the 2025-27 World Test Championship table after the victory. Its points percentage rose to 53.33. Australia remains at the top, but India has kept itself in the race for a place in the final.

Every Test result now has extra value for India. The team has more matches ahead, so a strong result in Sri Lanka can help build a better position before the next major part of the WTC cycle.

Captain Shubman Gill also spoke highly of Suthar after the match. Gill called the young spinner a long-term prospect for Indian cricket. He said Suthar has the quality to serve the national team for many years.

India Take a 1-0 Lead

The 165-run victory gives India a clear advantage in the two-Test series. It also gives the team confidence before the second match. That Test is set to start in Colombo on Sunday.

Sri Lanka now needs a much better result in the next match if it wants to draw the series. India, on the other hand, has the chance to close the series with another win.

The first Test will also remain a special match for Suthar. A 10-wicket haul in only his second Test is a rare feat. His six wickets on the final day turned a close contest into a clear Indian victory.

For India, the result had almost everything the team wanted: a large first-innings score, key runs from Padikkal, strong support from the bowlers, and a match-winning spell from Suthar.

Most of all, India showed patience in tough conditions. The team kept its focus despite Sri Lanka’s resistance and the threat of rain. The final score tells the story clearly: India 165 runs ahead, Sri Lanka all out for 206, and India 1-0 ahead in the series.
